*Katemma's Diner is open Thursdays to Sundays for take-out only.
*Check out the new beach in Howdenvale!
*Access to The Rocks, Lake Huron, is off Julian Drive.
*Be prepared for poor cell service, satellites pass over every 15 minutes.

Thoreau's is located on a heavily-wooded lot close to Lake Huron; on windy days you can hear the waves. The tiny cabin is 20 minutes south-west from Lion's Head and about 55 minutes to Bruce Peninsula National Park. This experience is perfect for experienced outdoor enthusiasts who embrace nature but also enjoy the comforts of electricity. It is a rustic, but comfortable experience.

This is considered a "camping" environment; guests must bring their own drinking water, sleeping bag, pillow, towel, soap and personal toiletries. Maximum 2 people. Please note: I provide special toilet paper for the outhouse, so it is not necessary to bring this item. Hand sanitizer is also provided.

There is no water. Non-potable water will be provided at the back of the cabin for washing up, dish washing, etc.

Inside the cabin: The cabin features a futon sofa which transforms into a double bed. There is a coffee maker, filters, small fridge with freezer, microwave, two-element hotplate, toaster, kettle, heater, fan, radio/CD player, table, two chairs, dishes, pots, cutlery, dish towels, dish soap, etc. For enjoyment there are playing cards available and a variety of books about birds, animal tracks, etc.

Outside the Cabin: When nature calls, a brightly-painted authentic outhouse is steps away. There will be natural odours inside the outhouse. And you may encounter flies and small spiders. For guests who are not used to an original outhouse this may be an overwhelming and possibly negative experience.

A fire pit is provided along with two campfire chairs. A small picnic table completes the "back to nature" experience!

There is also an outdoor hand-pressurized shower container and some privacy curtains for quick rinsing off. If you are adding water to the container, be sure to vent the pressure first by pressing on the valve.

Safety features include a photoelectric smoke alarm, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, and a whistle. The closest hospital is located in Lion's Head, a 20-minute drive away. Watch for roots, rocks and stumps when walking on the property.

For quick-needed staples, By the Bay General Store in Pike Bay is a few minutes away open seven days a week. By the way, By the Bay has just opened a LCBO outlet!

"The Rocks" are spectacular limestone formations about a 15 minute walk away. They are located off Julian Drive. In addition to the spectacular sunsets, you can enjoy a quick dip in the water. Check out the new beach in Howdenvale, just a 15-minute drive.

*Please call ahead to see if the following places are open: In Lion's Head, 20 minutes away, hot showers are available (seasonally) at the Marina for $5. Lion's Head also has a nice small beach. Enjoy the Bruce Trail's spectacular views. Non-potable water is free at the Lion's Head Beach Park Campground. Potable water is free at the nearby Beach Pavilion. Excellent free wifi is provided at the Lion's Head Library. The Library will re-open on August 17. The Bruce Trail is accessible from two access points in Lion's Head. Parking is provided.

I live an hour away but will have everything ready for your stay. Flexible check-in allows for your traveling convenience, you can arrive at any time. Instructions regarding location of key, other information, etc. will be provided to you when you make your reservation.

Welcome and I hope you enjoy your stay!

Andre ting, der er værd at bemærke
This is a comfortable "rustic" experience but it is advisable you have the following skill sets:

*** Mostly importantly, you must be comfortable using an original outhouse!

1. You are familiar with making and putting out a campfire safely.
2. You are familiar with insects, snakes, flies and spiders.
3. You a familiar with bird and animal sounds.
4. You are comfortable, if you wish, to use an outdoor hand-pressurized shower to cool off (privacy curtains provided.)
5. You are comfortable there is no mirror inside the cabin.
6. You are comfortable with the extreme darkness at night.
7. You are comfortable with isolation, with no "city benefits."

Hello, I'm a mom of two "20-somethings" and love gardening, yard work and hiking. My husband is an avid classic car enthusiast. We live south of the Bruce Peninsula, one of the most spectacular nature areas in Ontario. I am learning French and spend winters in Ottawa and Montreal.
