Her skal du være

Bari, Puglia, Italy, Italien

Low-rise buildings that are paired with tall institutional buildings, true Bari who live with the latest generation of immigrants, low-class people who live next to entrepreneurs and professionals. It is Madonnella, the district with the most contrasts in all of Bari.

Built in the 1920s, the district is bordered by the railway, via Abbrescia, the seafront and via Giuseppe Di Vagno, where the Giuseppe Garibaldi bridge leading to Japigia is located. In fact, also part of Madonnella is the elegant and more central "Umbertino district" born between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century and the newer and more peripheral area which is located in front of the beach of Pane e Pomodoro. But both of them differ from the heart of the district in terms of history and architecture.
We begin our journey starting from the Nazario Sauro seafront. We are welcomed by various and imposing institutional buildings parading in front of us in succession: from the Province with its characteristic tower in command of the Third Aerial Region, from the Palazzo della Regione to the National Social Security Institute. These are mostly buildings built between the end of the 1920s and the beginning of the 1930s, during Fascism, commissioned by the then Minister of Public Works, Herald of Crollalanza. Each of these buildings is reflected in the waters of a sea dammed by street lamps and benches on a regular basis, which have become a symbol of the city.

Seeing it "from outside" Madonnella therefore looks like an imposing "representative" neighborhood, but it is enough to enter from one of the alleys that start from the sea to understand how much the district is very different. We enter along via Egnazia. From here, leaving on the right the Apulian headquarters of Rai built in 1959 (the first "skyscraper" in Bari), we immerse ourselves on Via Dalmazia, one of the "widest" streets in the area that delimits the even narrower and more intricate streets teeming with cars , old houses and small shops.

Already on this street the panorama changes: the monumental high-rises give way to ancient and low pastel-colored houses with balconies and green shutters. The houses are however all in very good condition, obviously renovated.

Other buildings of this kind can be admired on via Vaccaro, a perpendicular road that we cross just as a Chinese man and a girl come to meet us: they are only the first foreigners we will meet while walking through this neighborhood. We then arrive on Corso Sonnino, where the church of San Giuseppe is introduced from Largo Monsignor Curi: built in 1913, it reproduces the traditional Apulian Romanesque style in modern characters.

We are now in the "center" of Madonnella. Next to the church, almost hidden, stands the small Esedra cinema which has been active for forty years, while almost opposite is the Nuovo Cinema Palazzo theater, which has risen from the ashes of the former cinema of the same name. Always surrounded by beautiful period buildings, we pass a well-known city pub and take the small via Somalia on the right, with its license plate showing the symbol of the fasces. Here the landscape changes dramatically: the same colored houses we talked about before are much worse: the colors are faded, the walls peeling.

In a few blocks we then encountered tall buildings that symbolize the institutions, low elegant and renovated houses and buildings that, even if they were period, are on the contrary a victim of time and neglect. Here is the first great contrast of Madonnella: the architectural one. But it is not the only one.

In via Somalia we come across a "recreational" club: "la Zella". It is one of the many clubs scattered in the most popular districts of Bari, where you play cards and drink beer. But here there is a big difference: inside there are not only elderly residents of the ward, but also many immigrants. Here is the second "contrast". In this district, foreigners have managed to "integrate" making themselves well liked by the historic residents.

We are now moving to Via Addis Abeba, for an obligatory stop: that of the historic Violante bakery which has been making focaccia for more than sixty years. “We are three brothers and we live in the building where our business is located - says the 58-year-old Giuseppe Violante -. Our life takes place entirely within the neighborhood and we also have excellent relations with all immigrants. When the Albanians landed for the first time, we were among the first to welcome them by offering them our bread ».

We continue our journey getting lost in the narrow streets of Madonnella. On via Cattaro we find another club and many balconies from which hanging clothes hang waving and men and women of disparate nationalities emerge. Finally, we come to piazza Francesco Carabellese, which houses the marble votive shrine of the Madonna which gives the neighborhood its name.
The current image of the Virgin, which still attracts faithful today, is however a copy of the original terracotta one that was destroyed in the postwar period. Rectangular in shape, it stands alone on a staircase. At the front, the imposing neoclassical silhouette, in pale pink tones, of the Balilla elementary school opposes it. Active for 90 years, it is one of the oldest in Bari.

Crossing the square and continuing along Corso Sonnino, the architectural contrasts appear even more evident. Elegant and luxurious buildings and shops stand out, such as the historic Boccia pastry shop, which has been operating since the 1930s.

Although it has always been popular, this is a district overlooking the sea and a stone's throw from the center: it is difficult to find better in the city. In via Abbrescia, for example, the blocks closest to the coast host offices and beautiful premises.
Madonnella is unique.
