Our house is an eco-friendly house, located in Laugarás village in South Iceland by the Golden circle. The size of the house is 212 square metres (2280 square feet) and can accommodate up to 9 (8+1 child). The style is somewhat Nordic minimalist with simple design, open spaces, big windows with magnificent views over the river Hvítá, Skálholt Cathedral, Hekla and the surrounding mountain circle. The home renting registration number is HG-00005218. The garage is not included in the rented space.

Boligen
The characteristics of this house consist of minimalistic approach with light, open spaces and big windows with magnificent views over the river Hvítá, Skálholt Cathedral and the surrounding mountain circle. In good weather conditions, you can see the volcano Hekla (the most active volcano in Iceland) out of the living room window (to the east), as well as the edge of Langjökull glacier (to the north). Many of the paintings on the wall are made by one of your hosts (Sigrún Lilja), who is an amateur artist in her free time.

When entering the house, the guest toilet is on the left in the hall. To the right, you enter an open space living room, dining room and a fully equipped kitchen. In the living room, you will find a modern log burner that is the focal point of the space. The living room is separated by a low wall and there are steps down to the lower living room space, where you find a luxury Italian sofa bed in Queen size (not visible from the main living room / dining room / kitchen area), with spectacular views, yet fairly privately separated from the main living room by a low wall. In the same space, you will find two desks with computer screens, keyboards and mouse that you can connect to, and a flat screen tv. The kitchen, dining room and living room are all in one space, with a big dining table and 8 chairs.

Passing the kitchen is the bedroom’s quarter, where you will find a utility room (with a washer that you can use if needed) and a big family bathroom. Just beside it, you will find exit doors to the south patio and the north patio. The south patio has a barbecue, table, chairs and a freestanding wood burner – however, during the hardest time of the winter, the garden furniture might be stored inside. However, we try to keep our barbecue outside as long as possible, as we Icelanders tend to use them during winter too.

Gæsteadgang
The house has following bedrooms:

Bedroom 1: Master bedroom with a king-size bed and an exit door to the patio

Bedroom 2: Double bedroom with a queen-size bed

Bedroom 3: Double bedroom with a queen-size bed (possibility to add a small bed for a child and also 1 mattress)

(Bed) room 4: The area beyond the low living room wall has an Italian luxury sofa bed in Queen size and office space with two tables, big computer screens, online TV with about 800 channels worldwide and nice computer games chairs. Even though it’s a part of the living room area, the low wall provides certain visual privacy. This space has extra high ceilings and great 180 degree view to the mountains.

The following items are available for guests to use during their stay:

• Coffee, tea, sugar and sweeteners
• Complementary milk (for the coffee)
• Access to spices, salt, pepper etc for cooking – some of the spices are locally made
• Aluminium foil and plastic wrapping (for food preservation)
• Table cloths and kitchen towels
• Bath towels and hand towels (in the bathroom cupboards)
• Detergents (dishwasher, washing machine)
• Fabric softener (washing machine)
• Toilet paper
• Hand soaps in toilets

• Plastic bags for bins under the sink

Otherwise, this accommodation is fully self-catering.

Laugarás, Island

Laugarás – the geothermal eco-village

Laugarás is a small, yet unconventional village by the river Hvítá, one of the big glacier rivers in Iceland, fostering the great waterfall Gullfoss. Rich of geothermal energy, villagers in Laugarás are some of the leading producers of vegetables and flowers that are grown in many of the village’s greenhouses.

Laugarás is known for its unique and warm weather conditions (on Icelandic scale) which are mainly caused by its rich fauna and trees (again, on Icelandic scale).

Just 200 meters from our house, the organic farm Engi offers organic vegetables and has an open vegetable market during weekend. Further down the road, you will find a few self-service vegetable sales stands by the local farmhouses – there you can buy very good products for a reasonable prize. Please respect the farmers and pay for the products you take.

Nearby the house is the petting zoo Slakki, which is a huge attraction for families. In Slakki, you can see all types of domestic farm animals in Iceland, as well as pets – where you can pet dogs, cats (kittens), rabbits and guinea pigs, as an example. In addition, you can play pool, mini-golf and putting in indoor fields. Furthermore, Slakki has a bistro, that is mainly open in the evenings.

The Laugarás Healthcare Clinic is only a short 3-minute drive from the house – it is open Monday – Friday 8:00 – 16:00.

Shopping

Selfoss is the next big town, approximately 30 minutes’ drive from the house, by road no 1. If you are coming from Reykjavík or Keflavík Airport, you will see the town on your way. Selfoss has a small shopping mall, hardware stores (Byko and Húsasmiðjan) and big supermarkets (Bónus and Krónan), along with several petrol stations. We recommend that you stop there for shopping, before coming to the house.

In Reykholt, which is a nearby village, you can find Bjarnabúð, which is a mini-market and a petrol station.

Nearby attractions, food and dining

The famous Golden circle attractions, Geysir, Gullfoss and Þingvellir are in 30, 40 and 57 km distance.

It is easy to find good places for dining nearby our house. Here are some of our favourite dining options:

Friðheimar is a family-owned and run greenhouse farm in Reykholt. They are one of the biggest tomato manufacturers in Iceland. They have a restaurant inside one of their greenhouses, where guests can enjoy delicious tomato soup, home-made bread, various dishes (where tomatoes play the leading role) – even beer and ice cream with tomato flavour – and enjoy the tropical climate of the greenhouse around the tomato plants. Furthermore, they produce spices, chutneys and all kinds of food products, which they sell at the restaurant. They only operate in the afternoon from 12:00 – 16:00 – we recommend you book a table because they are very busy and popular all year round.

Restaurant Mika is a family-owned restaurant in Reykholt. Their speciality is home-made chocolate and their deserts are worth trying.

Skálholt Restaurant (by Skálholt Cathedral) offers various Icelandic, traditional dishes. The Cathedral is worth visiting – only 5 minutes’ drive from the house.

Farm hotel Efsti-Dalur is about 15-20 minutes’ drive. This hotel has a restaurant in a converted barn, where you can see the livestock (cows and calves) through the window. They have, in our view, probably the best rib-eye steak in Iceland. Furthermore, they make their own ice cream, with many delicious flavours worth trying in their ice cream barn.

Flúðasveppir Restaurant is in the village of Flúðir (x minutes’ drive). Flúðasveppir is the biggest mushroom manufacturer in Iceland and at the restaurant, they serve mouth-wateringly good mushroom soup with home-made bread. A place indeed worth visiting.

Gallerí Laugarvatn is in the village of Laugarvatn. Their speciality is the local brown bread (baked in the geothermal soil down at the lake Laugarvatn) with smoked salmon, among other dishes. The place is also (as indicated in the name) an art gallery, with local arts and crafts.

Héraðsskólinn á Laugarvatni is a hostel in Laugarvatn in a historic building that used to host a junior high school. This building is a landmark in Laugarvatn, and the inspiration of the architect was sought to the old turf houses. Today, this building hosts a hostel and a café / bistro.

Græna Kannan Organic Café is in Sólheimar – approximately 20 minutes’ drive from the house. Sólheimar is an eco village and the café only sells food and products made of organic materials. This is worth the visit!

These recommendations are based on our preferences. Please see tripadvisor and visiticeland.com for other options.

We are a typical Icelandic family. The parents (head of the family) are both academics. Sigrún Lilja is Associate Professor at Bifröst University, Iceland. Furthermore, Sigrún is a very keen choral singer and an amateur artist (with emphasis on ‘amateur’) in her free time. Einar is assistant professor in Business Management at Bifröst University. He is also a poet and a writer. His grandfather, Jóhannes úr Kötlum, was one of the most renowned 20th century poets. His most famous work are the poems about the Icelandic Yule Lads, their horrible parents Grýla and Leppalúði (terrible ogres) and their ghastly pet The Christmas Cat. These poems have been translated to English. We run a publishing company Griffla, which has published these poems in English. You can buy a copy of that book online here: [tengill] Þorgerður Sól is a student in Business Management at Bifröst University. She currently lives in Selfoss with her boyfriend Egill. Furthermore, we have a son, Einar Björgvin, who is 12. Einar has three children from previous marriage: Sigurður – married to Bergdís, Ragnheiður – engaged to Kristinn and Svanhildur – her boyfriend is Valdimar - and four grandchildren: Guðrún Katrín, Sigríður Elma, Embla Björt and Jakob Freyr. They all live in Reykjavík. A big-extended family indeed.
