Sunny and open writing studio with over 150 years of literary history. Built in 1870, this lovely little house was where George Curtis edited Harper's magazine, wrote essays on transcendentalism , and argued for women's suffrage ( A recent guest informs me that George Curtis helped Thoreau build his cabin on Walden Pond ) The house has since sheltered painters, librarians, and poets.

Boligen
I have renovated the house to maximize light and space- avoiding clutter and letting the old fir floorboards speak for themselves . The eastern wall has floor to ceiling windows looking out over a private yard and garden. The main room is open floor plan with a cathedral ceiling. Two calm bedrooms (with doors) adjoin the main room.

Gæsteadgang
Except for the basement and barn, guests have the entire place to themselves. Driveway fits four cars.

Andre ting, der er værd at bemærke
Hope House is next door to Elmer's- one of the finest breakfast joints you will want to find. I provide fine coffee and tea, but breakfast next door is not to be missed.
Cell service is spotty in town, so directions should be noted before arrivial .
Anyone with an iphone can use wifi calling once in the house. There is also a land line.

Beliggenhed

Ashfield, Massachusetts, USA

Ashfield is a hidden green gem. All structures ( but a few) in town retain their original 19th century flavor. Hope House is located smack dab in the middle of town, but is just off the Main Street and provides a calm privacy. But if you need to head out, there is a lake, library, hardware store, historical society, pizza place, late night bar, aforementioned breakfast joint, and convenience store all within short walking distance.
Ashfield has a vibrant cultural scene that is unexpected for such a rural hill town. Farmer's market on Saturday mornings (spring and summer), live bands at the Lakehouse, a film festival and a fall festival in October, Double Edge Theater performances and training workshops, concerts, poetry readings, art shows.... and once we had a town wide beard growing contest.

I'm basically a failed introvert. Lived in a small cabin after college and found that I liked people too much to live like Thoreau. Upon returning to civilization I met a lot of people and found myself building houses and touring the country with an excellent string band (Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem). Moved to Ashfield in 2000 to raise two daughters with my wife , Jackie (pictured above without the beard). Fast forward 17 years and I get the chance to renovate this small jewel of a house - like my old cabin but less lonely. I like conversation and playing the banjo. I admit to liking ukuleles. And I like anything that is old, but shown in a new light- like this house.

Under dit ophold
I am sometimes around to introduce myself and show guests around. I will be in touch prior to your visit to offer instructions regarding your arrival. I live two hundred yards away, on the other side of the town common and behind the Episcopal chapel- so if there are questions and I'm in town, I am more than glad to help out.
