Porirua, Wellington, New Zealand

It is said that "people come to New Zealand not to see what Man has done but to see what Man has not yet undone". Here on the property of Shenandoah which is sited in a scenic, wildlife reserve with some of New Zealands most interesting history from the first Maori inhabitants, the first European settlers and the US Marine Corps to the many lovely walks you will immediately understand the significance of that statement. Only 5 kms away is a delightful, atmospheric country village with coffee shops and an award winning movie cinema serving wine to your seat during performances. The Inlet is ideal for swimming, windsurfing, kyacking. Walking or cycling the bird wildlife reserve where New Zealand nature is at its most stunning is also most highly recommended. 10 minutes away is Plimmerton village a seaside town with the best freshly caught Fish n chips in the southern North Island best eaten hot and steaming on the beach itself. A 20 minute drive will get you on the stunning Kapiti coast with its miles of windswept beaches, charming and delightful villages and Dept of Conservation walkways and parks with Maori and European historical sites all free to visit and to be enjoyed.
Wellington is simply a delight with a surfeit of attractions and is one of the two most safest cities in the world. It has the superb Te Papa museum, Parliament and Cable Car to name a few of the attractions

Kia Ora. My name is Simon and I am a retired Travel Director/Translator and a proud Kiwi. I live at historical Pauatahanui inside a wildlife reserve at "Shenandoah" a working farm which is sited on 12.5 acres of private, gentle rolling hills, landscaped gardens, native bush and wetland walkways overlooking the sparkling Pauatahanui Inlet enjoying all day sun and exquisite sunsets. Having worked for thirty years in the travel industry and meeting and hosting people from all walks of life, I have learned that above all when people travel, what they enjoy most is to meet the locals and learn about their history, culture and how they live. Pauatahanui is rich in history (with three races of people having lived on our farm in little more than 150 years and showcased in our private museum) rich in bird wild life (where the air around Shenandoah resounds with native bellbirds, tuis and parrots, granting an auditory snatch of what pre-European New Zealand sounded like. Darwin called it “a chaos of delight”) and rich in senic beauty (best observed over the Inlet from our top paddock walkways and viewing picnic point.) Come and see it all with me and stay in our Federation Style homestead and you will see why "Pauatahanui" means the place you never want to leave from. Ma te wa.

Interaction with my guests is at their discretion. I work on the farm during the day but am available for advice on what to see or where to go in the area or Wellington. Or we can simply sit on the porch and chat. A guided walk through the wetlands (very easy and enjoyable) or walk around to introduce some of the wildlife residing on the property. There are innumerable picnic spots and a gorgeous high, paddock private rustic seating for wine at sunset or breakfast at sunrise. Upon request, a tour of our private museum collection of rare, restored Harley Davidson motorbikes is available as is a tour of all the artifacts discovered on the property over the years from the first original Maori inhabitants to the arrival of the US Marine Corps in 1942. This museum is not open to the public. Shenandoah and its setting offers more than you might expect.
