Mesa Vista is a 1-room, "off-the-grid" cabin with 2 lofts located 24 miles North of Terlingua, Tx. and Big Bend National Park. It has a queen-sized bed, table and 2 chairs downstairs, and one loft has a queen-sized memory foam mattress.

AS OF SUMMER 2019 - We're moving to a "bring your own" format and lowering the rate. Please read the whole description carefully.

Enjoy the majestic scenery, brilliant stars- we're a 'Dark Sky' designated area, so there's no light pollution.

Boligen
SUMMER 2019 - You're welcome to stay with us but we want to make sure you understand that during June, July, and August, the temperature can be over 100F during the day and may be as hot as 90F at midnight. Mesa Vista is not air-conditioned.

Of course, it could be cooler. Check the weather info sites for the days you want to book.

NEW! Lower price. We've moved to a "bring your own" format so you can personalize your trip. And, to put the cherry on top, we just installed 240 watts of solar power, so you can charge your i-stuff, run a very small fan, and lantern.

We'll provide the cabin, queen sized bed downstairs(no bedding), queen sized mattress in the loft, 1 small table inside and 1 kitchen table with 4 chairs, 2 chairs inside, propane camp stove, ice chest, 1 pot, 1 frying pan, 1 small propane heater for cabin, fire pit, composting toilet/composting material, 1 outdoor 5 gallon solar shower water bag /shower curtain surrounded by a wooden wall, and amazing views.

You provide everything else: pillow, sheets, blankets or sleeping bag, towels, 16.04 oz propane (the nearby store sells camping propane), toilet paper, paper towels, kitchen sized trash bag/small trash bag for bathroom, large trash bags for outside can, hand sanitizer, drinking water and water to fill the camp shower bag- whatever you want to make your trip comfy and fun.

You must leave the property in clean, rentable condition and haul out your trash - there's a dumpster at the Little Burro Store nearby. Check with us for the code. You'll also need to maintain the waterless toilet- it's easy, and we'll leave you easy to follow instructions. As you will be cleaning the area and getting it ready for the next guest, you will be responsible for dumping the contents of the waterless toilet bucket. We have a "dumpster" outside, next to our storage building for the toilet bucket contents only.

Let me tell you about MesaVista (be sure and look at the pictures and read our reviews. People LOVE this place.)

Stars, blazing sunrises and sunsets, quiet...

Mesa Vista is a 10' X 15' off-the-grid cabin located in Big Bend Valley. 9 Point Mesa, Black Hill, Red Bluff, the Christmas Mountains are all visible from the comfy front porch.

As of 3/26/17 we now have wireless internet, available to the cabin only when we're home. It's weaker and slower than in the city. We will be traveling from late October - January.

The entrance to Big Bend National Park is just down the road,(27 miles from the cabin) as is Big Bend Ranch State Park. Boquillas and Ojinaga, Mexico, are an easy drive. Remember, you'll need passports if you go to Mexico.

You can book Rio Grand river trips in Terlingua, where there are also art galleries, shops, restaurants, etc.

Mesa Vista is a rustic, small wooden one room cabin with loft, outdoor, water-free toilet big enough for one person at a time, and a 5 gallon camping solar water bag shower. There is a queen-sized bed with memory foam mattress ( no bedding provided), a small table and a couple of chairs downstairs. There is a queen-sized memory foam mattress (no bedding provided) in one loft. The other loft is good for storage. IT'S CAMPING WITH A BEDROOM!

Outside, there is a cooking and "hang-out" area, a teapot, a propane stove top, 1 pot, 1 frying pan, and a table and chairs. This is a great place to relax with the beverage of your choice and watch the sunset reflect off the mountains or watch the stars at night.

If you're planning on letting your children stay in the loft, we recommend that they be old enough to not fall out of a loft. Access to the loft is via a wooden ladder.

If you bring a dog, you may NOT leave your pet alone in the cabin. NO cats allowed, unfortunately.

We're off the grid, so no running water at the cabin. We do have 240 watts of solar power which will run a very small fan and charge your phones and computers. It will NOT handle a hair dryer/hot iron, for example, or microwave oven.

You can relax and enjoy the silence and beauty. There is a solar light on the porch which can be switched off and on. There are unobtrusive (down pointing) solar lights outside to light the walkway. The outdoor composting toilet and solar camping shower are a short walk from the cabin.

There is a small local grocery store nearby that sells ice, food, firewood, beer, wine, propane, water and some camping supplies which also has public internet access.

You'll be about a half-hour drive from Terlingua and the Western entrance to Big Bend National Park. In Terlingua, there are bars, restaurants, clubs, a larger grocery store, liquor store, live entertainment... and the famous Terlingua Ghost Town. Alpine, Texas is approx. 52 miles North.

The cabin is approx. 3 miles off the paved road on dirt/gravel roads. There are NO street lights or street signs on the dirt roads, so arriving before dark is a good idea. If you are directionally challenged, this may not be a good fit for you. You don't need a truck or 4-wheel drive to get here, but you do need a little clearance. I wouldn't try it with a Corvette. Betsy's Volvo did just fine. These 3 miles of dirt roads and the area around the cabin can be pretty dusty. As you check the weather for your stay, understand that if it's been rainy or rain is forecasted, the road will be muddy.

The views are stunning- as the sun sets in the West, just like in Terlingua, we watch it reflected in the mountains to the east. 9 Point Mesa, Black Hill, Red Bluff, and the Christmas Mountains can blaze with orange and red and then fade to pink, purple... and then the stars come out. You can see our house ( a short walk away) , storage room and bus from the cabin porch.

While in Big Bend, it's a good idea to develop the habit of observing the ground around you when you are getting out of cars, approaching/leaving buildings, walking on paths, etc. Although not often seen, snakes do exist out here in the desert.

There are many opportunities for hiking, walking, bike riding, and other outdoor activities. As Big Bend is part of the Chihuahuan Desert, make sure that you bring containers for water if you plan on walking, hiking or cycling. You'll need to haul all the water you need for your day trip as no natural water will be available for you on BBNP or BBRSP trails. Stay hydrated.

In most areas, there is not a natural break from the sun. There are low, small greasewood bushes, thin mesquite trees, various cacti and dust....lots of dust. So, if hiking, plan a break from the sun into your day.

Mesa Vista belongs to Pat O'Bryan and Betsy Blaydes, who managed the Terlingua Las Ruinas campground in Terlingua previously. We have hundreds of positive reviews here on AirBNB and our goal is to make sure you have a relaxing, fun, safe stay with us. Mesa Vista is a new project, but we'll use the same care and diligence here. We want you to have a good time.
Now that we've changed our format, we ask you to help the next guest by leaving the property clean and ready to use.

You'll have five acres and the cabin all to yourself.

MesaVista is a non-smoking property.

Gæsteadgang
You'll have the run of the cabin, the porch, and the five acres of Big Bend beauty, as well as thousands of acres to visually enjoy. Feel free to hike the desert roads and explore Big Bend Valley. As long as you stay on the road, you'll be fine.

This area is sparsely populated and in a designated dark-sky area so it's quiet. At night there is no light pollution (or cell tower or power line radiation) so the stars are close and huge.

The outdoor (solar) shower and toilet are in a separate area nearby.

There are discrete solar sights to light the walkways.

Definitely bring bedroll or sheets, pillows, towels, flashlights, toiletries, bottled water, food, etc. as listed above.

Note: we are about 3 miles from Hwy 118 in the Chihuahua desert. There is desert wildlife- snakes, javalinas, jack rabbits, fluffy bunnies, coyotes. In the 10 years I've been out here, I've seen 2 rattlesnakes.

At night, you may get to hear a concert by the coyotes. They're shy and you probably won't see them, but their singing is pretty amazing.

About once a year we get a heavy rain of such magnitude that you can't drive on the dirt roads.

Andre ting, der er værd at bemærke
We're 52 miles from the nearest doctor/hospital. Terlingua does have an EMS service that is 30 miles away.

The dirt roads to the cabin have no street signs, so you might want to show up during the daylight hours.

The main road to the cabin is marked with concrete pyramids- after you book, we'll send you complete and detailed instructions.

If you enjoy Big Bend National Park, you'll enjoy the view in Big Bend Valley.

Mesa Vista is 3 miles off Hwy 118. Usually, there is very little traffic during the day and none at night. It's quiet, secluded, peaceful and gorgeous.

Big Bend Valley was once inhabited by Apache Indians and occasionally you'll encounter arrowheads and other artifacts.

Hi - Mesa Vista is owned by Pat O'Bryan and Betsy Blaydes. We previously managed Terlingua Las Ruinas campground in Terlingua. We've been welcoming travelers to Big Bend area for over two years. Betsy is a retired speech pathologist and a doting grandma. She enjoys reading Pema Chodron and watching British T.V. shows. Pat's a musician, photographer, and writer. He's retired from touring but still plays locally. He writes TV and Film music and produces music for other artists. Pat also run "Terlingua Cares," a local non-profit that focuses on making life better on both sides of the border. We'll meet you at the cabin, make sure you have everything you need, and help you with directions. Once you're "set," we're pretty hands off. We're here if you need us.

We do check our Airbnb account frequently through the days that we have guests, even when we're traveling. There is reliable internet at the Little Burro Store, 3 miles away.

If we're home, we have a land-line phone at our home to be used only in case of an emergency. Internet is also available when we're here, but it is optional. Some of our guests prefer to not be distracted and request that we turn it off.
