During this time of Covid-19, most events are being held virtually. Tours, shops, hiking, and RM Brooks General Store remain open. Beliggenhed

Rugby, Tennessee, USA

The restored Victorian village of Rugby was founded in 1880 by British author and social reformer, Thomas Hughes. This would-be Utopia survives today as both a living community and a fascinating public historic site, unspoiled by modern development. Twenty original buildings still stand, nestled between the Big South Fork National Recreation Area and the Rugby State Natural Area, surrounded by rugged river gorges and historic trails. Historic Rugby has been open to the public since 1966 and is nationally recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and many others as one of the most authentically restored and preserved communities in America. A national award-winning movie is shown of the history of Rugby, and tours of original buildings are available most days.

The southern tip of Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area forms a boundary line for most of the northern end of Rugby. Cutting deeply into the Cumberland Plateau, the Clear Fork and New Rivers come together at the Confluence to form the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River. Their main channels descend approximately eleven feet per mile. The swiftness of free-flowing water through the boulder-filled river beds have created a paddler’s paradise. Although the rugged terrain limits access, there are several popular hiking trails in the south end of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.

There are two Big South Fork trailheads in Rugby- The Gentlemen’s Swimming Hole and the Meeting of the Waters. Newly opened in 2010, the 725-acre Rugby State Natural Area offers a unique interpretive experience from the rest of Rugby as it focuses on a homestead built in the 1860’s on top of a ridge with a spectacular view of the Cumberland Mountains. Several other intriguing short trails are located in the village, making a total of nine miles of trails within Rugby.

Scott State Forest, Colditz Cove State Natural Area, Pickett State Park, Frozen Head State Park, Obed Wild and Scenic River Area, Sgt. Alvin C. York Historic Park, Muddy Pond Mennonite Community, Highland Manor Winery, Big South Fork Scenic Railway, Historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary and Distillery, and Blue Heron Mining Community are all within easy driving distance.

We have lived in beautiful East Tennessee since 1985, and feel so blessed to call this home. My partner, Annie, is from Michigan, and I'm from Pennsylvania originally (also have lived in Flagstaff, Arizona). We enjoy our rural life immensely; I'm a nature/wildlife artist, and my subjects are everywhere here - from our "critters" (deer, bear, coons, skunks, innumerable birds, etc.) that we see on a regular basis to the occasional bear or bobcat passing through. At 67, I value the peace and neighborliness of our area; there can't be many places left like this in the hurly-burly world we live in today! We are bookaholics, love to play games, enjoy all kinds of music but especially gospel and bluegrass, and LOVE to cook (and eat!). Our community of Rugby is a wonderful one, and we are here for good. And - one of our most favorite things is hearing "We loved staying here - we'll be back!"

Alexander-Perrigo House is owned by Donna Heffner and Annie Patterson. We are very often at the site, either running our shop (also located in the front of the building) or socializing with friends and guests, and also have a wonderful part-time employee. We are available to our guests 24/7. Rugby is a small, very friendly community - visitors are warmly welcomed, and our guests often leave having made new friends.
