This is a quirky old house without a single straight door, wall or window but its light, bright and comfortable with a great view of Crystal Lake in an area becoming celebrated for artisan produced foods, craft breweries and a "back to nature" approach to life. The area, well known as the Northeast Kingdom, is without doubt "the easiest place to get far away"! We've furnished our "Little Crooked House" with care and for comfort and we hope you love it as much as we do! ❤ Read on for pricing info

Boligen
Guests appreciate the cosy bedrooms with natural down comforters and all cotton linens, especially on cold winter nights! You'll have the whole place to yourself but only pay for the number of bedrooms you need for the size of your party. The house accommodates up to eight people. The nightly rate is based on two people sharing one room, extra person rate again assumes up to two people will share a room (for more information please ask when booking) Whether you book one bedroom or book all four bedrooms, you'll have access to the living room, kitchen, up to two bathrooms and all the outside space including sun deck, front porch and parking.
Barton is a great place to enjoy and explore the Northeast Kingdom all year round. Our Little Crooked House is easy to find just outside of the village of Barton, south on Route 5 and about a mile from the I91 (exit 25). Close enough for the convenience of the town's facilities but with enough distance to appreciate Crystal Lake and the view of Barton Mountain. There is plenty of communal space inside and outside so that guests can enjoy time spent together whatever the weather! We've tried to be environmentally and socially responsible in making our "Little Crooked House" a home; trying to re-use, recycle, up-cycle and repurpose wherever possible. We try to avoid "big box" stores and play our part in supporting the area's micro-economy by buying local and using local services and trades people.
USEFUL AND INTERESTING STUFF
The property is elevated from the road and accessed from a driveway shared by our neighbor. There is enough space to comfortably park two to three vehicles dependant on the size of vehicle. Please let us know when booking how many vehicles you'll have with you (including trailers etc) in order to ensure we have enough space to accommodate you without encroaching on the neighbouring property. Once on the property access to the house is mostly level and reasonably wheel friendly for wheelchairs and buggies etc (although, inevitably when there's a lot of snow on the ground, this would be more challenging!) with all amenities on the ground floor. Please ask before booking if you have any concerns about this.
The house was built around 1875, not much more than a century after the famous Roger's Rangers found refuge and sustinance on the banks of Crystal Lake. Like it's setting, some of the fixtures in the house seem to be out of a history book and some are more "shabby" than "chic". And whilst we're always trying to make improvements; we love it the way it is and hope guests will too! ❤
The kitchen has a gas stove, refrigerator, microwave, kettle, coffee maker, toaster and most of the pots, pans and dishes you should need.
Two of the bedrooms are off the living room, one facing the lake and one facing the wooded rear of the house with two further bedrooms on the first floor.
The living room overlooks the lake and has a sofa and three comfortable armchairs to relax in. We're sure you'll have lots more interesting things to do than watch TV but there's a flat screen with Netflix & Hulu etc and a dvd player should you wish to use them. TV comes via the Internet and whilst reception is generally good, weather conditions can sometimes disrupt the signal so worth considering bringing your own favourite dvds in case of rainy days! We have a small collection also (hidden away in the ottoman trunk) but they may not be to your individual taste.
There are mountain bikes, fishing rods and golf clubs available; please let us know if you would like to use them.

Her skal du være

Barton, Vermont, USA

The Northeast Kingdom is not only beautiful but full of interesting people, art, culture and history everywhere and an abundance of outdoor activities to enjoy year round. Enjoy fresh water swimming, biking, hiking, skiing and fishing.
Barton is a small town full of people going about their daily business. It has the usual facilities including banks, a post office, a hardware store, a well stocked supermarket, a gas station, a library and a church for almost every day of the week! Barton Village Treasures is one place I can't pass without visiting and rarely leave without buying something! Year round "Parson's Corner" serves breakfast and lunches (except Tuesdays when its closed); try their pancakes with Monroe's Maple Syrup (be sure to take some home, it's the best in the State!). Another of our favourite breakfast spots is The Busy Bee in Glover. In this "micro-diner" that only seats a dozen or so, you'll receive a warm welcome, speedy service, excellent food and a modest check! But for a truly unique summer dining experience "The Copper Plate" at River's Edge Farm Stand (by I-91 intersection) is not to be missed! Eddie is a whirlwind and serves the most delicious lobster rolls this side of Portland Maine! In the summer Crystal Lake State Beach, across from the Little Crooked House, is busy with families enjoying the sun, the sand and fresh water swimming. For a few dollars visitors can take a car into the beach area and use the amenities of the park including showers, toilets and barbeques; you can also hire kayaks.
There's a lively saloon a few hundred yards down the street and I'd highly recommend going to the "open mic" sessions on Wednesday evenings when some exceptionally talented musicians get together and play just for kicks!
Parker Pie in West Glover is seriously the best place around by miles for pizza and micro brewed beers; they serve until around 9pm most nights There are also regular music, quiz and specials nights; these change dependant on the season, so worth checking their website for up-to-date information. Fairly new to Barton is Nick's Snack Shack, serving lunch and dinner, great for bbq food, wraps and burgers plus seasonal specials such as seafood chowder. The Carriage House in Orleans is a beautiful building, recently restored and opened as a Café and Grill; it's a lovely place to go for brunch and early evening meals.
Village Pizza on the outskirts of Orleans, on Route 5, serves great value food and has two separate areas, one with bar and pool table (plus regular live music!) and one suitable for families with children. They also have a fun games arcade.
If you're willing to travel a little further, The Tap Room in St Johnsbury is worth the trip for atmosphere and a great selection of wines, craft beers and organic, homemade food.
Another great favorite is Pizza Man in Lynsonville; check them out on Monday nights for their 35c wings!!!! It gets busy so worth booking ahead!

My husband and I discovered the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont in 2004 when through good fortune and serendipity we found ourselves in Newport on the southern shores of Lake Memphremagog. We've been bringing our family to the area ever since and they have grown up knowing Northeastern hospitality at its best. We've owned our Little Crooked House by the Lake since 2015 and decided to share it with guests so that others could experience the good times we have shared here and make their own happy memories!
