The Pagoda House is a beautiful, traditional Hawai'ian-style home with a private pool and large tropical garden overlooking Kealakekua Bay Marine Sanctuary -- some of the best snorkeling in all of Hawai'i and a protected spinner dolphin habitat. The home's open-air design (only screens, no glass windows, on the front & sides) makes it feel like living in an oceanside treehouse — filled with the sound of waves and birdsong. The large lot and mature landscaping provide plenty of privacy.

Boligen
This almost-ocean front traditional Hawaiian-style home is just across a one-lane road from Kealakekua Bay Marine Sanctuary. It has been renovated 'just enough' to make it comfortable, stylish and convenient -- with quality appliances, kitchen equipment and decor and comfy bedding -- but without losing any of its traditional, laid-back kama'aina (local) beach house charm. You'll find everything you could possibly need for a relaxing tropical vacation -- including a living room hammock with an ocean view for catnaps -- but the home's open-air design still makes it feel just a tiny bit like glamping. ;-)

Pagoda House's layout makes it especially perfect for extended family (or two families) traveling together -- it has two ocean-facing master bedrooms each with their own ensuite bathroom, and two additional garden-view bedrooms that share a bathroom. The upstairs master bedroom, bath and private sitting area cover the entire top floor of the home and has stunning ocean and cliff views. The upstairs master shower overlooks a giant monkeypod tree. The home is entirely surrounded by a large and beautifully-manicured tropical garden and -- beyond that -- by vacant land and/or mature landscaping -- which makes it feel like you and your group are on vacation at your own, private beach resort.

The house is designed to stay cool in all but the hottest weather -- the offshore breezes come through and there are ceiling fans and box fans throughout the home. Air conditioning is unnecessary (but we have one anyway in the fourth bedroom only).

We are one of the few homes in the area with a swimming pool -- it is lovely and private, with a view of the ocean and surrounding palm trees, plumeria, orchids, hibiscus and other tropical flowers, fruit trees and vines. The pool and outside dining area are surrounded by tiki torches for fire-lit evening BBQs and swims. There is also an outdoor shower in our large and private back yard for rinsing off after trips to the beach or ocean paddles. Depending on the season, fresh starfruit, mango, passionfruit or bananas hang from the vines and trees.

One of my favorite things about the house is that it has plenty of places to gather with family and friends (the spacious and high ceiling'ed open-plan living / kitchen / dining area, or the pool and patio area/ the garden) but there are plenty of places to retreat for some alone-time too.

We are located directly across the street and down three lots from the Napo'opo'o wharf, where most kayak companies put in. No need to drive to the ocean -- you are there! Spinner dolphins frequent our bay and it is just a short kayak or SUP paddle over to the Captain Cook monument, which marks the spot where he was killed by native Hawai'ians in 1779. The stunning and sacred Kealakekua cliffs (Pali Kapu O Keōua) -- where the bones of Hawai'ian royalty (ali'i) traditionally were buried -- are visible from much of the home -- but especially from the upstairs master sitting area. Kealakekua Bay State Historic Park is only a few minutes walk away, as is charming Manini Beach Park. Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Park, local favorite snorkel spot "Two Step," the Painted Church, Big Island Bees, and Kona coffee farms / tours are all within 8-10 minutes drive. We are 12 miles from Kailua-Kona and 85 miles from Volcanoes National Park.

Gæsteadgang
You will have access to the entire house, garden and pool area.

Andre ting, der er værd at bemærke
We are in a residentially-zoned neighborhood that has a mix of private homes and vacation rentals. Most of the homes down here are traditional screen houses like our own and so we ask that you are respectful of our neighbors and remain highly mindful of your groups' noise level. Local law mandates quiet hours from 9pm to 8am. During the day, you need to keep your noise level appropriate to what you'd encounter in any residential neighborhood. No parties, weddings or commercial events.

Our next door neighbor, Alice, holds traditional gong-bath meditation ceremonies about once a week so you may at some point (and only during daylight hours) hear the sound of her gongs echoing through the jungle. ;-) . Last we checked she has all 5 star reviews across the web and on Airbnb experiences, so consider walking next door for a unique sonic meditation experience.

There are small colorful geckos in the yard and they often get into the house. They are your friends and harmless, so please don't hurt them. They eat the bugs you'd prefer not to have around.

Captain Cook, Hawaii, USA

Kealakekua Bay is a sleepy neighborhood now, but it used to be home to thousands of native Hawai'ians. This is where the ali'i (royalty) lived and the cliffs you see from the upstairs master bedroom is where they used to bury the bones of the kings to protect their mana (spiritual power) from rival tribes. Pods of spinner dolphins frequent the bay right in front of the house, and there is great snorkeling a short kayak paddle away at the monument that marks the spot where Captain Cook was killed by native Hawai'ians back in February 1779. There are only three companies licensed to rent kayaks or give tours on this carefully protected marine sanctuary and they all put in at the Napo'opo'o Wharf, which is just across the street and three lots to the right of Pagoda House or at Kahauloa Bay, which is about a five minute walk away. When the water is calm, there is easy swimming access to the bay at lovely Manini Beach Park, right around the corner / a few minutes walk south and west from the house. You can also get in from the wharf (but the rough stairs out are a little awkward depending on your age or fitness level) or down at the state park rock beach a few minutes walk north (but if it isn't totally calm, that spot is a challenge too). Please use your good judgment because there aren't any lifeguards here. For snorkeling from shore, make sure to check out Two Step - the local favorite spot about 10 minutes drive south of us, just north of Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Park.

For surfers: when there is south swell there can be a left break at Manini Beach, just a few minutes walk away. Not for beginners! There's also a more reliable left reef break a five minute drive away at sleepy Ke'ei Beach (my favorite spot to read a book under the palm trees and cool off in the bay). The road is bumpy so you need a vehicle with decent clearance. Many other spots north in Kailua / Kona too. For boogie boarding, you can try Ho'okena Beach, about 20 minutes or so south of us. Stop at Super J's on the way and get yourself some pork laulau to go! ;-)

Hey there! We are Mary (mom) and Jaya (daughter), and we both love to travel. We are blessed to split our time between our home in Sausalito, California and our home on Kealakekua Bay Marine Sanctuary in the village of Napo'opo'o on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Many of our trips over the years have been for surfing (Costa Rica, Sayulita Mexico, Bali, Lombok, various Hawaiian islands), but many more have been 'just because.' And when we travel we love to stay somewhere that is beautiful but not necessarily fancy -- ideally, a home that reflects the essence of the place we are visiting and makes us feel like we've truly lived in and experienced it (instead of being isolated off in a tourist-filled, generic resort).
