Det skal I lave
We will begin our day at Tsuruoka Station where we will catch a special bus to Mt. Yudono, one of the Three Sacred Mountains of Dewa. Upon arriving at Mt. Yudono we will change into shiroshozoku, the white robes of the Yamabushi mountain monks. These are the same robes worn by the dead of Japan. The Yamabushi wear these robes to signify their metaphorical death and rebirth during their training in the mountains. From here we will meet at the Mt. Yudono Shrine where a Yamabushi Monk will bless us before we go down to a secret trail that leads to a hidden waterfall at the back of the shrine. Here we will perform a number of rituals to prepare our bodies and minds before praying under the waterfall. We will then enter the sacred shrine of Mt. Yudono itself where we will learn about the ancient religion of Shugendo and witness its sacred hot spring god. We will then enjoy shojin ryori, the traditional monk cooking of the Yamabushi and move on to the Fire Festival in a dark room in the shrine. I will then guide you back to the station, or help you book lodging at the Mt. Yudono lodge.
I am the co-founder of The Hidden Japan, a promotional company here in Yamagata that is dedicated to putting the countryside charm of the Tohoku Region on the map for international tourists visiting Japan. I have lived in Tokyo but was ultimately drawn to Northern Japan for the pristine nature, warmhearted communities, and truly genuine people here who have helped me make a life here in Sakata City. I have taken part in Yamabushi training here in Yamagata and recently produced a program with NHK World on the Yamabushi here. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/vod/jtripplan/2059059/
Her skal du være
Mt. Yudono is one of the Three Sacred Mountains of Dewa. These three mountains are part of an ancient pilgrimage known as the Journey of Rebirth. Mt. Haguro represents the world of the present, Mt. Gassan represents the world of the afterlife, and Mt. Yudono is worshiped as the mountain of rebirth and the future. We will experience the Yamabushi rituals of rebirth on Mt. Yudono, the most sacred site of these mountains.
