Det skal I lave

Together, we'll explore one of the most vibrant and history rich neighborhoods in Paris, visiting bakeries, forgotten synagogues, and the oldest israelite school in Paris. Using some rare archives, we will travel through history, from the Nineteenth Century, when the neighbourhood was a yiddish speaking hub for recent immigrants, through World War II, and up to today. Our tour will take us inside the secrets of the "Pletzl" - to a community café for the last jewish residents of the neighbourhood, through a garden commemorating the jewish community of the 1930's, and to a place even parisians have never set foot in. We will encounter destinies of refugees, of religious men, of jews who died to liberate France from german occupation, but also of unknown heroes who helped hide jews during the war. Each encounter will help us to question and to adress what it means to be jewish in France, today.

Dine værter

After having gone to the same yiddish summer camp many years ago, both Sophie and Emmanuel have decided to dedicate their time to exploring and understanding the streets of Paris. The rest of the time, Emmanuel makes documentaries, and Sophie goes back and forth between the U.S. and France. We still have not agreed which is the best jewish bakery on "Rue des Rosiers"!

We will pass through some of the oldest synagogues of Paris, as well as some jewish landmarks, and have a break at a community café... The tour will end by the river, in the first places that were liberated from the nazis in 1944.
