This is your opportunity to see Mount Vernon like a local. Even local residents are unaware of the rich history we have here in Mount Vernon, outside of the famous estate of George Washington. Our first stop will be at the Gum Springs Museum with GSM President Ron Chase to learn about one of the first communities of freedmen founded by West Ford, a freed slave and former foreman to the house servants at Mount Vernon. Depending on availability, we will also visit one of Good Shepherd Housing's affordable apartments and hear how our mission has evolved with our changing community. On our way to the Woodlawn Mansion, you’ll spy the Woodlawn Quaker Meetinghouse, home to abolitionists who supported the economic independence of free African-Americans in Woodlawn and Gum Springs. Our next stop will include special tour of the Woodlawn Mansion, which was part of the original Mount Vernon estate. If weather and time permit, we will include a visit to the American Horticultural Society's River Farm. Once part of George Washington’s farmland, this 25-acre historic site overlooking the Potomac River features a blend of formal and naturalistic gardens, including a four-acre meadow, an orchard, a wildlife garden, and an award-winning children’s garden.. We will conclude our day with a tour and wine tasting at one of Fairfax County's newest wineries, Woodlawn Press Winery.

I'm the Director of Development at Good Shepherd Housing. I'm also a small business owner, who has lived in the Mount Vernon area for almost twenty years. I ran for county supervisor a few years ago, and had the good fortune to learn even more about the history of our community as part of that experience, and I love sharing that history with others. Mount Vernon is so much more than the estate of George Washington! Mount Vernon is the home of the Gum Springs Community, Gunston Hall, the Woodlawn Quaker Meeting House, Fort Belvoir, and the Workhouse, to just name a few.

Mount Vernon is the home of the Gum Springs Community, the Woodlawn Mansion, the Woodlawn Quaker Meeting House, Fort Belvoir, and George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate, to just name a few. Besides these points of interest, we will also drive through one of the apartment communities that Good Shepherd Housing is actively redeveloping, and we may get to visit an apartment if one is available to see!

This was a great way to see the hidden gems of Southern Fairfax County straight from a local! We started the tour at George Mason's Gunston Hall, a beautiful piece of property and home on the preserved Mason Neck. Our tour guide, Lacie, provided us with history and facts about the "Father if the Bill of Rights" while showing us inside his home. Next, we headed on the bus to Gum Springs (via Old Colchester Road, which is part of the Potomac path) - an African American community founded by one of Washington's freed slaves (West Ford). Gum Springs has a museum which tells the story of this unique enclave. Next, we headed down to the Lorton Workhouse and Occoquan Regional Park - home of the future Turning Point Suffragist Memorial. The Lorton Workhouse is currently home to Fairfax's local arts scene, but previously housed women incarcerated for protesting for the right to vote. Through this tour, we learned about the 1st through 10 Amendments, Amendments 13-15 and 19th, and toasted to the 20th Amendment by enjoying craft brews at one of Fairfax's local breweries - Fairwinds!

This is an enjoyable and fact-filled tour "off the beaten track." It avoids all the mainstays of the Mount Vernon area and instead focuses on the communities and their histories. Well worth it. I highly recommend it.

Working in the Mount Vernon area, I drive by some of these places of interest often, but had never given them much thought. The tour opened my eyes to the significance of these places and their impact on our history. Very informative! The brewery tour/beer tasting afterwards was a great way to end the excursion. Thank you!
