We will begin our journey with a short bus trip to join one of the "Clay Trails" above St Austell. These are shared use walking/cycling/horse-riding trails across the former china clay quarries high in the hills.
Our 5.75 mile walk begins with an open country section, gradually rising to join our highest point. The views can be stunning in good weather and I will point out exactly what you're looking at.
The whole experience offers plenty of opportunities to see and identify wildflowers, birds and animals.
Beginning our descent through a more enclosed, wooded track, we will hear running water for the first time as we walk alongside one of the tributaries of the St Austell River. There is evidence of the mineral industries here, including buildings and flooded clay pits.
In the bottom of the valley, we pick up the bed of a former mineral railway line and follow this up river to Wheal Martyn, where we will stop for optional refreshments at the café.
Retracing our steps for a short distance we will continue to walk beside the upper reaches of the Saint Austell River then pick up another former railway, which provides a superb 'avenue' route to the outskirts of St Austell. From here we will wind through tiny streets to finish our adventure back at our start point.
