Learn about an author's life in his childhood home

We look forward to welcoming you into the Stevenson House, the historic childhood home of Robert Louis Stevenson, author of "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde," "Treasure Island," and other famous works. You will have an unique chance to see behind the facade of an historic building in Edinburgh's New Town, which is also a living family home and the place where Scotland's most-read author grew up. Hear what it was like for him as he struggled to become a writer, exploring Edinburgh's heights and depths, and learn about the life of today for the family that lives here. At the end, you'll be treated to home-baked cakes and tea or coffee in the formal dining room, and you'll learn more about life in Stevenson's day and now.

Please be aware that, being a nineteenth-century family home, the house is not wheelchair friendly. To access the house you will need to climb seven steps from the street. Fully to enjoy the experience you will need to be able to climb, and descend, a flight of about twenty-four steps in your own time.

My family has lived in the Stevenson House since 1992, and it has been my husband's family home since 1971. With our children, we love to welcome guests to this historic home and to share our knowledge and experience of the house and its most famous inhabitant, the author Robert Louis Stevenson. I'm a graduate of the École Hôtelière de Lausanne, and I have three decades of experience in hospitality. My husband John is a lawyer by training, but by calling he is a guide for explorers in Edinburgh.

A totally unique experience. We came in knowing next to nothing about Robert Louis Stevenson and ended up interested in his life and times. And tea was delicious!

I'm a fan of musical Jekyle and Hyde,so we talked about the book. They have abundant knowledge about RLS and Edinburgh, and very considerate. I love the fading light in the nightfall sky outside side the window, and underneath was the lamp which accompanied RLS's childhood. It was so unforgettable memory!

I showed up 30 minutes early and didn’t want to bother the family but it was cold and raining so I hoped they might let me wait inside until it was time. Not only did they let me inside but they greeted me with warmth and kindness and we began our talk a little early. John is incredibly knowledgeable of all things Robert Louis Stevenson and Edinburgh. His charm and kindness combined with a beautiful reading voice left me feeling so grateful for his time and knowledge that I mentally vowed to read far more of RLS’ works and to listen to the Robbie Coltrane reading of Kidnapped! Also, amazing carrot cake and perfect tea left me feeling fortified for the evening ahead! It was like touching a living thread tying the present together with Robert’s life and stories.

We enjoyed learning from John many interesting stories of Robert Louis Stevenson‘s life, including his childhood, as well as a little bit of history of Edinburgh from that time. And the homemade treats for tea were delicious. The house is filled with fascinating artifacts from John’s family.
