Det skal I lave

This is a real nature adventure! Our excursion starts at Sea Trek at the Army Corps of Engineers Bay Model where we will learn about the tides, currents and geology of the San Francisco Bay over coffee and tea. (NOTE: Bay Model closed Sunday). We venture along the Sausalito waterfront west along the Houseboat community along a wetland where we see migratory and resident seabirds including egrets, surf scoters and great blue herons, harbor seals rafting out and the occasional bat ray or leopard shark. We cross to the north side and deploy a mini ROV (Remote Operating Vehicle- an underwater drone) where we search and record by camera marine habitat and wildlife in the shallow sections of the Bay. We visit and walk around a restoration Island near Tiburon and see other wildlife including hawks and nesting birds and learn about native plants at this important restoration site. We snack and explore at the island before paddling back to the Sea Trek dock. Included in this experience is data collection and guests are encouraged to add observations of wildlife on our research project with iNaturalist, and survey and pick up plastic debris with the NOAA marine debris app. This data goes into a long term database tracking species presence/absence and marine pollution and will help better protect the wildlife of the San Francisco Bay.

I am a marine biologist, shark conservation specialist and National Geographic Explorer. We have been teaching a Bay ecosystems class for 5 years at the University of San Francisco, (part of this experience!) and I have been studying local shark and ray populations with the California Academy of Sciences. With our Trident ROV we are also mapping Bay habitat and use this underwater drone to find sharks and rays, collecting data to better protect the Bay ecosystem. As a writer and photographer we are also engaging citizen scientists documenting species from birds to marine mammals to sharks. Richardson Bay has a dynamic ecosystem with critical habitat including a small wetland, marsh and eel grass beds hosting migratory sea birds, herring and Dungeness crab, harbor seals and porpoises and at least 7 species of sharks and rays

Her skal du være

Starting at the Bay Model in Sausalito next to the Sea Trek Kayaks venue where we launch, we will learn about the tides, currents and geography of the San Francisco Bay. Following a safety talk, we paddle past houseboats, across Richardsons Bay to an island restoration site where we can photograph seals, migratory and resident seabirds and look for sharks & rays in the Bay with the Trident ROV (UW drone), collecting data on habitat and species
