We meet at Holy Name Cathedral, the flagship church of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Many acclaimed archbishops and cardinals have called this parish home: Cardinal Bernadin, Cardinal George, and most recently Cardinal Cupich. With a brief introduction into the storied history of Chicago's relationship with the Church, we proceed where modern Chicago began: from the ashes of the Chicago Fire.

Holy Family Church in Chicago's Little Italy neighborhood is the sole church on the South Side to withstand the flames of the fire. This baroque church, previously managed by the Jesuits, even contains a multitude of ghost stories.

Pivoting from the supernatural to the realpolitik, we explore the Chicago Machine at Nativity of Our Lord Church. Mayors Richard J. and Richard M. Daley called this parish home for more than a century. Mayor Richard J. Daley, who served as mayor from 1955-1976, attended daily Mass every here morning before managing the Chicago Machine.

Next, we make a few stops to highlight Chicago's inculturation: St. Therese in Chinatown, the Celtic art-laced Old St Pats in the West Loop, and the Polish cathedral-style St. Mary of the Angels in Bucktown. We'll conclude the tour with any suggested stops in the city and a conclusion that addresses the challenges and opportunities the Church today faces.

Welcome to Chicago! My name is Max Wolfgang Rosner and I have explored questions at the intersection of faith and public life for years. Professionally, I've worked at the Vatican, the Chicago Archdiocese, and a Catholic refugee agency in Oregon. I have a postgrad degree in intercultural theology from Trinity College Dublin in Ireland and a degree in government and theology from Georgetown University. As a researcher in this field, I have studied the role of the Catholic Church in the Balkans, Ireland, and of course, Chicago. As a native Chicagoan and parishioner of Holy Family-Notre Dame Parish, I have deep first-hand knowledge of Chicago's religious, political, and cultural histories. I look forward to taking you along on this journey as we'll explore the quirks, charms, and narratives of Second City Catholicism.
