Det skal I lave

It's no secret that drinking sake is a major theme that runs through many elements of Japanese culture and local lifestyle. From after-work drinking parties to religious ceremonies and festivals - you'd be hard pressed to find an activity that DOESN'T involve sake to some degree! But have you ever stopped to wonder why? Let me take you on a journey around the ultimate 'foodie' town, Shiogama (Miyagi Pref.), to not only help you better appreciate how to enjoy Japan's national drink, but also to better understand the deep connections between sake and Japan's Shinto religion. Your first stop of the day will be to 1200+-year-old Shiogama Shrine to discover the spiritual roots of sake drinking and sake making, before heading to nearby 'Kumakyu', a local sake specialty shop, for a workshop in how to appreciate the different varieties and what to look out for in order to pick the best drop! Next take your new-found knowledge to local sake brewery 'Urakasumi' (historical brewers of the sacred sake of Shiogama Shrine) for a tasting session of 3-4 seasonal varieties. Last but not least, roll into one of the town's incredible sushi restaurants (Shiogama is famous not only for having the largest catch of fresh tuna in Japan, but also the most sushi restaurants per capita!) and continue the sake tasting, this time pairing with the fresh-as-fresh local seafood! Itadakimasu!

Mitsumasa

I'm a Iocal guide and foodie expert, born and raised in Sendai City. Between back-packing as a student and working in tourism, I’ve traveled overseas over 30 times. Everywhere I go, I always find the best experiences are with a local to help you discover the best (and tastiest) local secrets that you won't find in guidebooks. I want more international visitors to discover the 'real' Sendai City, so I’ve produced some bilingual walking tours and local experiences of my own! I'm a huge foodie and, working together with 'Slow Food International', my experiences have a focus on sustainability and protecting the flavours and food culture unique to the Sendai area. As well as being a qualified tour guide and coordinator, I am also studying to become a 'sake sommelier'! Leave it to me to help you find your favourite local drop!

Mad
Shiogama is famous for its high quality seafood, in particular its fresh tuna and mind-blowing number of sushi restaurants…
Drikkevarer
By wine, I mean rice wine, aka sake!! During the tour you will enjoy two tasting sessions: one at a local sake specialty…

Her skal du være

The entire tour will take place in the main town area in front of Hon-Shiogama Station. Each destination (shrine(s), sake shop, sake brewery, sushi restaurant) is located within 10 mins walking distance. Depending on the progress of time on the day, we will also call into a couple of other historical/cultural points along the way, and perhaps a local tea stall for some tea tasting, as well!
