Det skal I lave
Meet your host at the entrance to Middle Week Farm. Walk across our farmyard and enter the Horse Barn where you will meet our three draught horses, Albert, George & Bella. The horse or horses being used for your horse and carriage ride will already be harnessed. We encourage guests to get as up close and personal with our wonderful horses as they wish, but if you prefer, you can watch them from a distance. For two guests we normally use one horse, but for any number of guests over two we use a pair of horses to ensure that the load is an easy one. The welfare of our horses is very important to us and we are proud of their turnout and condition. You are welcome to take photographs of our horses before we hitch up our carriage for the start of a carriage ride through the rolling countryside surrounding our farm. The carriage is comfortable but open to the elements and it can be cold, so make sure you bring warm and weatherproof clothing and an umbrella. Once we are hitched up you are invited to climb aboard the carriage and we begin your trip back in time to a gentler age. During the ride I will normally share some of the local history, describe some of the farming practices you will see, and give you some insights into our way of life, but if you want peace and quiet we can do that to! You are welcome to take photographs at all times during the experience.
I am a horse drawn farmer in North Devon who uses three heavy draught horses to work our land trying to maintain a tiny carbon footprint. We do not have modern machinery nor use tractors, just heavy horses and mostly Amish made equipment. My wife and I believe in treading lightly on the land, and endeavour to live a plain life. I have a passion for our horses and use them in their traditional role almost every day on our small farm in beautiful North Devon. I first worked with farm horses in the Amish and Mennonite communities of Pennsylvania U.S.A. as an 18 year old, 40 years later I still keep faith with these miracles of nature. We believe this experience offers our guests a unique insight into a way of life that in many parts of the UK has been lost almost entirely.
Her skal du være
The experience begins and ends at 'Middle Week Horse Drawn Services'. You will visit our horse barn and then during the ride we will visit the beautiful North Devon Countryside surrounding our farm, with glorious rolling hills and tiny lanes in a peaceful rural scene reminiscent of a bygone age. If you watch period dramas and wondered what it would be like to travel in a horse and carriage, this is the experience for you!
