My experience allows you to get up close and personal with a live and active kombucha brew, from start to finish! You will come to see (and feel if you like :)) what a healthy SCOBY pellicle looks like and observe the signs of successful fermentation at varying stages of the process. Because the experience should reflect what it's really like to homebrew kombucha, we will start with an entire gallon of kombucha that is ready to be bottled and flavored (second fermentation). You will be working with 2-3 different flavors and ladling some of the kombucha into Grolsch-style bottles. While the sweet tea steeps, you will sample a range of flavored and non-flavored kombucha made using different tea bases (black tea, oolong). The experience ends with us putting together a new kombucha brew (first fermentation) which entails me explaining the steps and you pouring in the water, sweet tea, SCOBY and starter liquid, before covering the brew properly. You will leave my experience with a SCOBY and 2 cups of kombucha starter to start your own brew (instructional handouts included). More importantly, you will have the confidence and foundational knowledge to brew kombucha in your own home.
I'm a fermentation enthusiast who brews kombucha weekly and I have privately taught several family and friends to brew kombucha in the comfort of their homes. Besides kombucha, I am also well-versed in fermenting tempeh and make my own kimchi. My hands-on workshop provides the unique opportunity for you to get acquainted with the entire kombucha fermentation process prior to actually starting it yourself. As a researcher in training, I am experienced in distilling the scientific brewing process into relevant concise nuggets of information for everyone to understand.

You will arrive at my home in suburban Chandler and we will have the workshop in my kitchen. There will be quite a bit of standing around the kitchen island to observe and bottle the kombucha brew, which is why I am keeping the maximum head count at three persons for everyone's comfort. You will be able to sit and relax more during the sampling portion of my workshop :)

We keep a shoe-free home so guests will have to take off their footwear. Disposable slippers will be provided. To keep everything clean during this hands-on workshop, all guests should wash their hands first before handling equipment.
