Experience the best of Stellenbosch's food and wine scene while engaging with a seasoned international winemaker. We'll decipher the Cape winelands long winemaking history and learn firsthand why many top wine critics consider the Cape to be the most exciting wine region in the world. As your personal winemaker, I will host and guide you through a wonderful food and wine adventure at Spek en Bone, a hidden gem on the historic Dorp Street featuring chef Bertus Basson’s (2019 South African Chef of the year) signature flavors and local boutique wines. Over 4 courses and 4 wine pairings, we'll enjoy small plates featuring local, seasonal ingredients whilst you and your companions discover delicious wines from South Africa's avant garde Winemakers. Throughout the evening, we'll be discussing the dynamic and evolving state of the wine industry, specifically featuring SA's terroir, winemaking excellence and cultural history. I never-endingly enjoy engaging with my guests to learn about their wine preferences and personal history so that I can create a palate-pleasing custom experience. I also take pride in my knowledge of where wines originate from, how its made, and the personalities behind the wines. Amalgamating these transforms wine into a true art form and a craft everyone can enjoy.
Howzit, guys? My name is James and I've been making wine around the world for over a decade. As a winemaker, I've worked in the best wine Meccas ranging from Napa Valley California, Casablanca Valley Chile, Yakima Valley Washington State , and Marlborough New Zealand. After working the 2015 & 2016 vintages here in Stellenbosch, I fell in love with this beautiful and dynamic place, emigrating in January 2017. Since then, I've been creating a boutique wine brand while working towards my Masters at Stellenbosch University. I've just bottled my maiden 2018 Chenin blanc, and recently finished the 2019 vintage. Opened in Stellenbosch in late 2016, Spek en Bone is the brain child of Chef Bertus Basson. Possessing an extremely upbeat yet relaxed atmosphere, the great minds at Spekkies provide delectable and creative tapas paired with the most interesting wine list in South Africa, featuring boutique producers. Spek en Bone recycles 100% of all materials and products used on the premises and sources local ingredients.
