Learn the art of handmade Japanese woven mats

The tatami shop is my family business. My father is a craftsman of tatami and I'm working with my father now. This tradition is important in Japan, and it has developed its own skills for the "shokunin-waza," or craftsmanship, involved in making mats. I will teach you about these skills. you'll get an authentic look at Japanese culture and awesome souvenir with unforgettable experience. First, I'll show inside a factory. Then you'll get explanation about materials and how to sew tatami mats. And make your own mini tatami mat using skills. We're gonna use needles, strings and some tools. But this time we use easier materials to make it. In addition to, You'll sew your own mini tatami by hands in a part of the whole process. The other process, you'll use staple gun. Because it takes too long if you sew the whole process:(
You can take it with you to decorate your home. Its size is almost 18×26cm. Thickness is about 2cm.

After making the tatami mat, we'll enjoy tea time at the guesthouse next to the workshop.

When you come to the experience and back to Osaka city, you'll go through Sakai city. Sakai is famous of Japanese knives and Japanese sweets. I recommend going there if you have time.

Please note, this experience is a little hard for guests who sewing first time. Sometimes it takes longer than 2.5hours.

I'm the third-generation in my family carrying the tatami making tradition forward at our workshop.
The workshop is located in Izumi-city. Izumi is not central city of Osaka. There is between the Osaka city and Kansai airport. You can also enjoy the local place in Osaka:)
And I'm also an owner of the Fujitatami guesthouse next to the workshop. My job is to continue the tradition of craftsmanship and to spread awareness around the world, so I am improving my English. I would love to share this experience with you!

Such an incredible experience if you are interested in sewing or traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Issel's father is a true craftsman/excellent teacher and Issel is a very helpful translator with a lot of great insight. Making tatami mats is not easy work but is incredibly fulfilling and leaving the workshop with your own miniature tatami mat you've made yourself makes it well worth the money.

Great experience - something totally different to usual tourist's itinerary! The experience takes place in Issel's grandparent's home (now converted into a guesthouse) & workshop, where they have been making tatami mats for generations! You get a short introduction on tatami mats and it's history, and an opportunity to ask questions (very handy for those who are new to Japan and need to find out more about maintenance of tatami mats!), and then you get a tour of the workshop, hands on experience with assembling a full sized mat with both traditional and modern equipment, and then you get to make your own little replica to take home! Group sizes are capped, meaning that you'll have plenty of supervision, and both father and son were very patient as I took my time choosing my design! After that, we had traditional Japanese sweets and tea on our little replicas which was a nice touch. During this time I had ample opportunity to ask many more questions about Japan and everything else - Issel is very friendly, and a very interesting well-travelled host! He has good knowledge of the local area having grown up here, and was quick to spot that I enjoyed making things and was able to suggest many other activities in Izumi as well as the wider Kansai area that suited my interests perfectly! In short - amazing host, and excellent slightly-off-the-beaten hands on experience with traditional Japanese craft! Would recommend! :)

不只可以參觀塌塌米製作過程,還可實際操作。看到日本專業達人的技術,是非常特別的體驗,最後還可將自己製作的成品帶回家。非常推薦想要體驗深度日本旅遊的人。不會日語也沒關係喔!

We had such an awesome time! Issel and his father were very friendly, patient and knowledgeable when teaching us about the history of tatami mats and super helpful when we got to make smaller versions to take home. We highly recommend doing this workshop - it’s very interesting learning about tatami mats and we enjoyed father and son’s enthusiasm for their craft! The location is very easy to get to from Osaka and Issel was punctual in meeting us to walk his family’s workshop. As mentioned in other reviews, this experience was the highlight of our Osaka trip.

We did this activity on the last day of our 2-week Japan trip and I must say, this was my favorite day thanks to this activity - and we had lots of great days including sakura watching, deer feeding, castles, and sushi. So just so you have perspective. Issei San, his father, and his grandfather before were professional tatami makers. We got a deep insight into the nitty-gritty of tatami making and we could participate in tatami creation ourselves. Like real tatamis, go into someone's house tatamis. It was a blast of responsibility slash fun. And of course, we made out mini tatamis, too. After the activity was done, Issei served us some Hochica tea and the best mochi I ever had. He also graciously played for us on his guitar and sang songs with us for like an hour - way over what we paid for. Then we went sightseeing with him and also introduced us to a great soba place where we had a unique, local experience. I mean he was a ******** star host, very communicative and kind to us. His dad, too. I super recommend this experience to anyone who wants to see the real, 2019 Japan.
